Whilst some cars take ATF transmission fluids such as Dexron, many modern vehicles require special synthetic-based hydraulic fluids that are specifically formulated for power steering use and include additives for seal and pump lubricity, and corrosion protection.
Unfortunately there are many substandard Power Steering Fluids on the market that lack the viscosity improvers, friction modifiers and anti-foaming agents additives necessary for proper lubrication and protection of the pump. Use of a substandard fluid eventually causes the steering system to overheat and the pump to break down. If you are having issues with your power steering unit, it is probably caused by fluid so consider having it changed by a reputable garage or better still, buy your own power steering fluid and insist they use it.
