Information

Finning Oil Analysis is a complete oil analysis kit performed by the Number One oil condition monitoring laboratory in the UK - Finning. Due to their partnership with Caterpillar, they have extensive experience testing oil in a diverse range of sectors including, construction, rail, manufacturing, oil and gas, marine, commercial, mining, renewable and OEM's. RAVENOL UK use them for testing the oil used by our motor racing partners to monitor the condition of these high performance engines, so we can personally guarantee their professionalism and expertise. As well as detailed graphs and tables, results are summarised in plain English, allowing you to get a clear idea of the condition of your engine/ transmission and exactly what remedial action is recommended.

Regular checks on the condition of the oil can extend the life of both the engine and transmission and help spot potential problems long before they materialise. Finning's aim is to help you better understand what goes on inside your vehicle and machinery, helping reduce unplanned downtime, extending oil drains and detecting potential future failures before they happen. Oil Analysis kits are a great way to understand your engine's condition and prevent any problems before they cost you money. Oil analysis is essential for all types of Motorsport and we recommend taking a sample after each test or event, but it's also a good idea for everyday road cars and vans as part of their annual service. For regular testers, Finning Oil Analysis reports show data from previous tests so you can see how conditions are changing over time, which is very useful for determining service intervals or when an engine rebuild is due.

How it works: Take a sample and fully complete the submission form that comes with every sample (the more information you can provide on this sheet, the better the service Finnings can provide). Post your sample directly to the laboratory (not back to us!) using the envelope provided and results will be sent out as soon as possible after sample receipt (excluding weekends and holidays). The report will come to you directly per email from the laboratory. Every sample receives a standard routine analysis, dependent on what equipment the sample has been taken. All samples will be analysed and interpreted in accordance with general Finnings condemning limits.

The price includes :

  • The sample kit and instructions
  • Return postage to the laboratory
  • The full laboratory analysis report (sent to you directly by e-mail)

To meet new UK post office rules samples of oil require specialist return mailer bags (supplied) and MSDS sheets (also supplied). Maximum 400ml (4 x 100ml bottles) can be sent in one package.

NB. You send the oil sample directly to the laboratory. If you wish to query anything about a sample you have sent please send us an email giving full details of your vehicle which we will then pass on to the laboratory. WE CANNOT ANSWER PHONE REQUESTS!

We no longer send anything out by post so these will be sent via DHL Parcels. Best to order a few other items at the same time as the carriage charge is the same.

Fining Oil Analysis told us about one example which saved a customer thousands: "An oil sample for an engine was taken every month for a year and 3 elements were measured. In April there was an increase in certain elements, namely Silicon (from environmental dirt), Aluminium (from piston wear) and Iron (from liner wear) caused by dirt ingress into the system which was detected by our oil analysis. Owing to the associated wear metals being attributed to upper cylinder (U/C) wear, the most likely source of the dirt ingress was through the air intake system, hence one of our expert diagnosticians has recommended the client checks the air induction system for the source of dirt ingress. This enabled the customer to identify an air filter problem existed well before it resulted in an engine failure and the values returned to normal levels over the coming months. Hence the engine failure was avoided, there was no unplanned maintenance and the engine life has been extended. That is work is done when the oil analysis identifies the problem, not merely because the engine was due for its pre-scheduled maintenance slot, which might have been weeks away."

The kit and instructions are fine and the report comprehensive but I never need the kit urgently so would appreciate an option for cheaper postage.

A useful tool

I used this to get some clues as to the condition of the engine in the boat I recently bought. It was a good prompt service that I would use again. It would be better still if there were a few lines of expert commentary interpeting the substances found - I had to do quite a bit of digging to understand the results.

Thank you for your comments. We have passed this on to Alcontrol who actually do the testing for their comments. Normally they do put a comment if there are any problems found which need attention.
